The Gardener “The Gardener” tells the story of Helen Turrell, who, at the end of the nineteenth century becomes pregnant with an illegitimate child. Her missions are to make her grouchy uncle smile, as well as nurture her growing green thumb by creating a rooftop garden. She happens upon a man who is “evidently a gardener” and asks him for help to find her nephew. It's not a bad book by any means, but perhaps could have used a little more complexity and intricacy in its plotting.

On the train to her hotel, Helen meets Mrs. Scarsworth.

And before he knows it, Mason is on the run with the girl, and wanted, dead or alive, by the mysterious mastermind of this gruesome plan, who is simply called the Gardener. During the Great Depression, young Lydia Grace is sent to stay with her uncle in the big city until her father finds a job.
