I don't think that the movie was ever intended to be dumb but I felt dumb watching it.
The year is 1123.A knight and his servant are accidentally sent to the year 1992.These medieval people are pretty much like fish out of water in the modern society.Les Visiteurs (1993) is a comedy film directed by Jean-Marie Poiré.It stars Christian Clavier and Jean Reno.Clavier plays the servant Jacquouille la Fripouille and also his relative of the 90's, Jacquard.Reno plays the part of Godefroy de Papincourt, Comte de Montmirail.Valérie Lemercier does a double role playing Godefroy's love interest Frénegondé de Pouille and the descendant Beatrice de Montmirail.Marie-Anne Chazel plays Ginette la Clocharde.Isabelle Nanty is Fabienne Morlot.I borrowed this movie a little while back from the library.I had seen the film once before, back in 1997.I enjoyed watching it the both times.It was a big hit.So big that it got a sequel and an American version.The movie has many funny slapstick moments, like when those two wash their hands in a toilet and when they cause a flood in the house.This is a very nice time travel movie.The Americans have Back to the Future, the French have The Visitors.You can visit this movie more than once.
Outside of some laughs here and there and some decent performances from Christian Clavier and Valerie Lemercier. All Harry Potter Movies Ranked Worst to Best by Tomatometer It is not easily forgotten.

January 1, 1993 It gets a little tiring after awhile trying to keep up with the reading and viewing at the same time, at that pace. It's really American humor and it's not even funny American humor at that. Altogether very enjoyable. Later that evening we ran Les Visiteurs 1 on the laptop for them. Christian Clavier is superb in his two roles, but for me the star was the Countess. What I liked about it was Jean Reno when playing it straight - there was real menace and one could imagine a medieval knight in today's society coming across as being psychopathic as life was cheap in mediaeval times and to kill a social inferior was as nothing. A bit like "BTF", our heroes feel stuck and alien to their new environment and want to get back to their time-line.
Shame it had to be remade, although I never saw the English version I'm sure it wasn't as good. My French is just about up to the dialogue and who-ever did the work has managed to keep the humour throughout. This quirky French comedy is pure absurdist fun and frothy as a milkshake, but with the queer interloping humor of the French.

Reno is excellent and Lemercier is both beautiful and hugely talented (again, it is a shame she hasn't been in more films for English speakers). I'm Chinese who reside in Sydney, Australia, and was fortunate to have a government operated television studio to show foreign programs in its original language with English subtitles. However, as my title indicated, it was the original french track that made me laugh.
With Christian Clavier, Jean Reno, Valérie Lemercier, Marie-Anne Chazel. The humor behind them converging with modern day technology wasn't exactly groundbreaking, but their attributes and small inconsistencies really endeared them to the audience, and made for some real laughs throughout.
