the royal hunt of the sun film review

In 1532, Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro leads an expedition into the heart of the Inca Empire and captures the Incan Emperor Atahualpa and claims Peru for Spain. A disturbed young girl starts believing that there is something very sinister at work after her estranged father visits her at her mother and grandmother's house with the woman he plans to marry. The "victory" of the west can be seen as no more than the "good luck" of the bloody thirsty warriors of Western Europe who learned so much from fighting with each other that collectively they could achieve world hegemony. There's one deeply intriguing scene in which the white soldiers massacre a whole Indian tribe and director Irving Lerner (for whom this was the last theatrical film) plays flamenco in the soundtrack! Yes, Christopher Plummer's accent and antics are, to the the least of it, peculiar, but trying to see this as a historically accurate epic seems to be missing the point. However, the story is great, the dialogue is interesting and sometimes thoroughly moving and the actors are doing a terrific job! This is not a movie for everyone to see it and appreciate it -it could seem a bit slow at times- but it stands as a fine and very decent product for those of us who are interested in historical events om Latin America. - MERK The Royal Hunt of the Sun is a 1969 British-American epic historical Drama film based on the play of the same name by Peter Shaffer. Was this review helpful? Full marks for The Royal Hunt Of The Sun and...sorry, but I have to mention it...Plummer doesn´t look bad in this movie...Looking for something to watch? Have to admit that I don't remember much of it, but there was unnecessary playing with film technique, but all in all the film was very critical of the conquistadors and I suppose we should be thinking about parallels between the conquest of the Central America in the 16th century and the Vietnam war in the 1960s. 9 out of 16 found this helpful. A trivial army of 167 conquistadors lead by Pisarro killed 7000 of the Inca's god king Atahualpa's army of 80,000 in a single battle. Only one real battle scene occurs and it is effective to a degree even though the scoring is completely bizarre! - Young Martin). Royal Hunt of the Sun has been called a cult classic.

In the Sudan, in 1884 to 1885, Egyptian forces led by British General Charles "Chinese" Gordon (Charlton Heston) defend Khartoum against an invading Muslim Army led by a religious fanatic, Mohammed Ahmed el Mahdi (Sir Laurence Olivier). Was this review helpful?
The film and play are based on the Spanish conquest of Peru by Pizarro in 1530. They find an extremely well-organised empire with their own God: Atahualpa. This part is portrayed by Plummer in a very controversial performance. Christopher Plummer, hissing and prancing, is a wickedly funny Inca king, and Robert Shaw, who, as Pizarro, has been running the show for the first hall hour, is hilariously upstaged. Just how DO you make those planked, rope bridges that you see cross deep ravines in films? The film tells the epic story of an expedition that took place between 1560 and 1561, headed by Pedro de Ursúa, in search of "El Dorado." Sensational film which depicts brutality, hypocrisy, greed. This is, of course, not a very modern movie: there are no visual or audio effects and at certain points the camera work isn´t perfect (a bit shaky, for instance). 6 out of 6 found this helpful. Through the childhood and the adolescence of Giacomo Casanova (from his memoirs), this is a description of how people live in the Venice of the 18th century: customs, habits, medecine, ... The mental conflict makes for a fascinating story line as well as a riveting performance by Robert Shaw and a jaw-dropping characterization of a Sun god by Christopher Plummer. Ten years later, a widow arrives in town intent to take revenge from her husband's killers.

In this battle horsemen, steel, and an ideology of duplicity won the day over a naive other world whose innocence is now virtually unimaginable. This movie is about a beautiful culture and empire being ruined within a very short time: the Spanish conquistadors come to Peru in search of gold and to convert the natives. 6 out of 27 found this helpful. is oppressively constricted here. He captured Incan Emperor Athahualpa and claimed the Peru lands for king Charles I of Spain. It's a rare chance to see Whiting before he fell off the radar and everyone needs to at least glimpse Plummer in his get up, if only to recognize how versatile the man is! I thought that this was a very interesting, but deeply flawed film. 9 out of 12 found this helpful. I found absolutely NOTHING in this movie that makes it worth watching. They're absolutely fabulous!!! 28 out of 37 found this helpful.
