Top Billed Cast. I…Not as fun or funny as its predecessor, but I would gladly watch Toshiro Mifune boss clueless people around like a grouchy grandpa again if they had made Sanjuro into a franchise character like Zatoichi. Seeing it here emphasizes how this film is, despite its comedic asides and occasionally dramatic tone, is really just a very well directed action movie. Sometimes an unsheathable sword is necessary (up against another unsheathable sword; The eruption of blood here has an ethical dimension which is lost in its subsequent imitations.

With red juice gushing out of the villain's chest like the niagara falls, and Mifune unflinchingly frozen in his victory stance as blood rained on him, I was struck by an awe-inspiring realization that that one single stroke of katana had served as the full stop for an epic journey.I had an urge to stand up and cheer, yet the nameless samurai was not happy at all, there was no pride in his eyes when he looked down on the corpse lying beside his feet.
