The first Keeper’s House accompanied the 1832 tower. Trip Report – Costa Rica Photography Workshop – 2019, Costa Rica Photography Workshop Trip Report Day 1 As we all arrived San Jose for the 2019 Costa Rica Photography Workshop, we met at our hotel which has some of the most beautiful gardens in the city. We left Anchorage and bordered our three chartered Cessna 206's, enjoying the 1:15 minute flight to the preserve. The Marshall Point Light Station’s history began in 1831, when Samuel Marshall sold 4 acres of land to the U.S. government for $120. The Town signed a 30 year lease with the Coast Guard for the house and the grounds. The first keeper's house was thwacked by lighting long ago and a new … The U. S. Lighthouse Service was established in 1789. A Fresnel lens replaced the 7 lamps, classified as a 5th order light, white and fixed (not flashing). We had great… Read more… →, Trip Report – Bald Eagle Photo Workshop – November 2014, We just got back from our annual Bald Eagle Photography Workshop in Haines, Alaska! It is 24 feet from base to light level, the first 12 feet are constructed from granite blocks and the remaining 12 are brick. The Coast Guard took over the Lighthouse Service in 1939. The current Marshall Point lighthouse structure was built in 1857. Lin and Sam arrived a couple of days early… Read more… →, Trip Report – Grizzly Bear Photography Workshops – 2018 – August, The 2018 Grizzly Bear group had a great week of beautiful weather with lots of bears at one of the more remote national parks in the United States, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve. Additional acres were added later to extend the site to 6.5 acres. As a National Landmark, the committee worked with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission to ensure the authenticity of the barn, using materials which reflect the era in which it was constructed near the end of the 19th century. The lighthouse aids navigation along the Gulf of Maine coast and marks the entrance to the mouth of the St. George River and the harbor located in the fishing village of Port Clyde. The eagles were in good numbers and feasting on the salmon run on the Chilkat river just outside of Haines, Alaska. Marion Dalrymple was the first child born in the present Keeper’s house in 1895. In 1969 a fog horn replaced the bell and the bell tower was dismantled. The round tower, made of the same material, was 20 feet high, 17 feet in diameter at the base, and 9 feet at the top. Legislation to transfer ownership of 35 Maine lighthouses to federal or state agencies, towns, or non-profit organizations was proposed by the Island Institute, enacted by Congress, and signed by the President in 1996. The lantern is cast iron and contains the light, which is 29½ feet above sea level. The 2018 Bald Eagle workshop #1 attendees got to experience the eagles closer than they have ever come to us before. The Lightkeeper who served the station for the longest period was Charles Clement Skinner, a Civil War veteran who worked at Marshall Point from 1874 to 1919 (the longest tenure of a keeper at the same light in the history of the Lighthouse Service). The couple had two daughters, the second of which died in infancy and was … This Lighthouse appeared in the movie Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks. However, the LORAN equipment became obsolete, and in 1980 the Coast Guard boarded up the Keeper’s House. I'm always impressed with our great guests who love the outdoors and photography as much as I do and love to spend long days out in the field.
