Before reading this, I thought maybe all the low ratings were due to high expectations, and I lowered mine, telling myself that I didn't mind if Seraphina was traveling a lot - she would meet new people and learn new things. Oh hey! The structure. I think I wound up giving a lot of things a pass because the novel was set up as being in “unusual” times as it were and necessitating unusual or at least atypical behavior. I adored the expanded (and diverse) cast of characters, humans and half dragons alike. The character/world/thematic development — which was subtle but constant in Seraphina — didn’t work. NOO!!!! It’s true that intense love of the first book can sometimes doom one’s experience of the second, alas. Hardback: 596 pages Publisher: Random House. Shadow Scale, by Rachel Hartman | Book Review. Tonight it was only the Queen and me, and the approaching “singleton” was a friend, thank Allsaints: the dragon Eskar, erstwhile undersecretary at our dragon embassy. The first half deals with Seraphina’s quest to find the dragons; the second with her search for her uncle. He’d said nothing about why Eskar had suddenly decided to come back, or where she’d been. The winter wind carried the cheerful sound away; far below us the city curled under a quilt of new snow, silent and thoughtful as a sleeping child. Nothing is as disappointing to me in a book than a promising, engaging story ruined by an author who lacked the stamina, or imagination, to finish what they began.
