There's banter and occasionally snarky lines from his observers who pop up as holograms on his device (one of whom sports a name that's an obvious anagram of "Zuckerberg"), but in ultimately, weightier themes take over, and serve as a sobering reminder that the joys of playing Portal sprang as much from the witty narration of GLaDOS as from the gameplay. If you make that mistake, you will be cheating yourself out of a memorable experience. Unfortunately, Magrunner fails to live up to the sum of its best parts. Both take place in scientifically designed obstacle courses, both have characters who monitor your actions as you play, both have a non-lethal “gun” that you use to solve puzzles, and both have seemingly harmless tests of your abilities that quickly take a much more lethal detour. I like this game and for the price of $19.99 it's a steal. If you love horror, but you’re not big on puzzles, then I’m afraid to say that Magrunner probably isn’t the game for you. To developer Frogwares' credit, the almost shrewd amalgamation works surprisingly well at times, yet is rent asunder when the incompatibilities of the written and interactive mediums are exposed. If you were told this was the cast of a '90s Saturday morning cartoon called Rad Kidz, you would think nothing was amiss – you even have a robot dog. Whether it's in the haunting messages scrawled on walls, in the sci-fi nonlethal weapon with a mere two functions, or even in the elevators that shuttle you between almost every level, Magrunner doesn't concern itself with concealing its inspiration. In addition, I think two of achievements are bugged, since I received them even by clearly violating the conditions. My opinion would start to sway a bit more positive, then I quit again for the lack of care. Suddenly, chains are inexplicably hanging down from the ceiling just to make sure you know you're in an eerie place, early testing grounds of the tech. With its two halves combined, Magrunner is a solid game, but one that feels like a testbed for something much better - once the designers have the guts to fully chart a new path instead of relying on tried and Aperture Science-tested concepts we’ve all already seen played out. You have surfaces you can use and surfaces you can't, it goes into the same "destructed Aperture" feeling you had from Portal 2, and it even ventures into space. It begs to be loved. The story is so so....but the puzzles are quite cool. Nice ! The scenery is nice, though. Nonetheless, I definitely liked the look of the game. This Portal clone does what most other platformers disguised as puzzlers do wrong: It doesn't let you save, using checkpoints instead, but still makes you carry cubes around (always a bad sign) for ages, jump from tight spots to tight spots (preferably timed jumps,) and as a result forces you to grind all these moves all over again at the first faux pas.
